Second day in woods pays off for detectives
When Historic City News reported from the scene where a citizen discovered a boot along with the remains of a human foot yesterday, the thick, dense woods made it unclear how much other evidence could be located.
The search was called off, temporarily, last night and resumed early this morning in a heavily wooded area along SR-16.
Eight members of the Sheriff’s Office Mobile Field Force participated in the search this morning along with detectives and crime scene technicians who searched the area for most of the day.
The second day of the search paid off when human skeletal remains were located in several areas deep in the woods.
According to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kevin Kelshaw, a backpack and wallet were discovered that are believed to belong to the unknown subject.
“Based on the evidence recovered with the remains, it is believed that the subject was a transient and was not from this area,” Kelshaw told Historic City News local reporters. “At this time there is no evidence of foul play.”
As a matter of protocol in such situations, a forensic autopsy will be performed in an effort to determine the exact cause of death and to make a positive identification of the remains.
The investigation is continuing.
