Historic City News has learned that the St. Augustine Chapter of the NAACP, 40th ACCORD, the Stetson Kennedy Foundation, and the Democratic Party of St. Johns County will sponsor a film which chronicles the little-known story of American’s first voting rights activist Harry T. Moore, who was assassinated, along with his wife, on Christmas night in 1951.
The film Freedom Never Dies Despite the culture of indifference and domestic terrorism that Black Floridians experienced in the 1930’s and ‘40’s, Moore, a Brevard County teacher, convinced 100,000 African-American Floridians to risk their lives by registering to vote.
Moore continually sought official redress from Florida’s governors and enlisted Thurgood Marshall in prosecuting brutality against blacks.
Stetson Kennedy, whom Moore’s Progressive Voters League supported in the 1950 Senate race against George Smathers, has pursued Moore’s murder case for over five decades.
Kennedy will explain recent developments and investigations in the Moore murder case. Kennedy’s exhibit shows the Florida Harry Moore knew and displays photos of the voting rights struggle.
The public is invited to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the NAACP by attending this presentation scheduled for February 20, 2009 at 6:00 pm and will be held at St. Paul AME Church, 85 M. L. King Ave. St. Augustine, FL 32084.
