Local archaeologists to speak at meeting

The St. Augustine Archaeological Association will commemorate Florida Archeology Month by presenting three local archaeologists speaking about recent projects in St. Johns County according to an announcement received by Historic City News today.

The speakers are being presented jointly with the Florida Public Archaeology Network and will appear at the monthly meeting of SAAA on March 3rd at 7:00 PM, in the Flagler Room at Flagler College.

Please join FPAN and SAAA members in celebrating Florida Archaeology Month by learning more about newly discovered local archaeological resources.

Dr. Greg C. Smith will discuss the “Griffin/Kamm Site,” located on the Matanzas River in the Crescent Beach area. Radiocarbon dates and pottery indicate early prehistoric use, and the site is also part of the El Vergel Plantation, dating to the late 18th century. El Vergel, like Fish Island, was owned by Jesse Fish. Dr. Smith holds degrees in Anthropology from Florida State University and the University Florida, and specializes in historical archaeology.

Robin E. Moore, Historic Resources Coordinator for St. Johns County, will discuss several important projects conducted in the county in 2008, as well as the county’s continuing role in archaeological research and preservation. Moore holds degrees from the University of Florida and the University of West Florida.

Myles Bland, who holds a degree from the University of South Carolina, will also report on current archaeological investigations in St. Johns County.
