Eight day dig on Cuna and Spanish Streets

City of St. Augustine Archaeologist Carl Halbirt will be having an archeology dig weekdays, Wednesday, March 4 through Thursday March 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of Cuna and Spanish streets.

Visitors are welcome to watch archaeologists and volunteers at work, discuss excavation results and learn about St. Augustine’s unique cultural history from items buried more than 300 years ago.

Also available in the VIC Gift Shop will be canvas bags with one of a kind silk-screened 17th century medallion and t-shirts with the ‘disarticulated donkey’ which was found on Anastasia Island a number of years ago.

Archeology Month has been held during the month of March since 1992. Archeology month is state wide celebration supported by the State of Florida, local municipalities including the City of St. Augustine and St. Johns County, the Florida Anthropological Society and its chapter affiliates including the St. Augustine Archaeological Association.

Archeology Month is designated to highlight the contributions archeology has made toward enriching the public’s awareness of the state’s unique cultural heritage. This includes the various prehistoric occupations that have occurred in Florida over the past 12,000 years, as well as the 500 years of European and African history that has shaped Florida today.
