Brunson holds Elks Lodge event

April 4, 2008

Randy Brunson
St. Johns County Commission District 3 candidate Randy Brunson has promised an evening of fun, food, music, meeting people and making friends tomorrow night at the St. Augustine Elks Lodge.

The event is scheduled Saturday, April 5, 2008 between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and offers an opportunity for citizens to talk to the candidate about issues important to them and to learn more about Brunson’s priorities for the Board, if elected.

So far, Brunson faces opponent Mark Miner and incumbent Ben Rich for the District 3 seat. As of the most recent published reports, Miner has raised $1,450.21 and Rich has raised $550.00 in donations and loans towards the cost of their campaigns.

Brunson tells us that he will “speak briefly” but promises “no speeches!” asking everyone to come dressed casually. There will be complimentary food and a cash bar available for those who come early. For more information about the candidate or Saturday night’s event, call 904-819-5510.

For a rainy, Saturday night … very good crowd!

Glad to see so many faces that understand the importance of electing honest candidates with the experience to lead.

I’d say Randy made good on his promise of an evening of fun, food, music, meeting people and making friends.

As with so many of these political events, the room was filled with other candidates from St. Augustine Beach and other races in St. Augustine and St. Johns County.

The Republican regulars were there, campaign workers, volunteers, and a few cornerstones from the St. Johns County GOP.

Randy took the opportunity to roll out his campaign design on brochures and cards and he circulated sign-up sheets for yard signs and business locations for those interested in displaying a larger sign as he gets closer to Election Day.

Voter petitions were still being collected and Randy asked that any registered voter who has not yet signed a petition card to allow his name to be placed on the ballot to contact his wife Carol at his campaign office on Ponce de Leon Blvd. next door to Burton Electronics.

I heard from some of the Realtors about the trouble makers.

Too bad, but you’re right, Freddy.

Randy called me yesterday and stopped by to visit with me today.

Unfortunately, there was more than one “unwelcome guest” at the party.

I have written before that then candidate Shoar and I used to kid each other about these events — we called them “candidate rallies”.

At least a dozen of the attendees were running for something and somehow they felt it appropriate to attempt to hijack Randy’s hospitality…. and a few have opposing interests in the upcoming election.

It is the epitome of arrogance for outspoken opponents of someone hosting a private party to crash in on them in a pathetic attempt to further their own agenda.

Randy is in this race for the right reasons. His opponent is nothing like him. In fact, I find it difficult to think of any similarities as I write this message. So why would someone like Ken Bryan, himself a candidate in another district - and an outspoken supporter of Randy’s opponent, feel compelled to “work” Randy’s event.

I enjoyed seeing a number of friends, sharing old and new stories and showing support for a man whose motives I feel are honest and genuine. That Randy would feel the need to visit me personally to apologize for the behavior of some who he would have preferred were not there in the first place is saddening.

He shared some other thoughts privately that I won’t repeat here, however, he says he’ll know better what to do next time and I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Got something to say?
