The only Medal of Honor awardee with St. Augustine accreditation in Florida is because he enlisted in the Army and served in St. Augustine.

Clarence Milville (also written Milville) Condon was born August 12, 1875 in South Brooksville, Maine; but later relocated to Florida and enlisted as a Private in the Army in St. Augustine on December. 8, 1894, serving in Battery G, 3rd Artillery Regiment; he re-enlisted on December 7, 1897 as a Corporal, and made Sergeant on December 17, 1897.

On November 5, 1899, Sergeant Condon was near Calulut, Luzon, Philippine Islands where he led his four-man detachment, charging “40 intrenched insurgents, inflicting heavy loss on them,” and routing the survivors back into the jungle.

On June 15, 1900, after detachment from the U.S. Army and assignment to the Phillipine Cavalry, Condon was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant by the Filipino commander; subsequently rejoining the U.S Army in the Artillery Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant.

Upon return to the U.S., he was stationed at Fort Dodge, Iowa, where wife Fannie birthed his two sons.

Condon died at Walter Reed Medical Center on July 20, 1916 (also listed as November 5, but I think that is the burial date) and was buried as a Lieutenant Colonel in Arlington National Cemetery.

Got something to say?
