Benjamin Lightsey
UPDATE: Shortly after 10:00 a.m. today, Benjamin Colenn Lightsey, 30, 541 N. Horseshoe Rd., turned himself in with his attorney. He was charged with first degree murder and was booked into the County Jail where he is being held without bond.

At 5:54 this morning, Historic City News was advised that the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office was executing a search warrant at 6:45 a.m. and to assemble at the Sheriff’s Office on Lewis Speedway. Most of us suspected what was coming; but now there is a twist.

A 30-year old St. Johns County man is being sought today (Tuesday) in connection with the death of his 36-year old wife nearly ten days ago. St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect, identified as Benjamin Colenn Lightsey, 30, 541 N. Horseshoe Rd. earlier this week. Once arrested he will be charged with first degree murder which carries no bond.

The investigation began on Sunday, November 9th at 6:00 a.m. when the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing person.

At the time Lightsey reported his wife Melissa, missing and stated he had last seen her enter the ocean near Surfside Park in Vilano Beach about six hours before. He told detectives that he entered the water in an effort to bring her back and that the water was extremely cold and Melissa refused to walk back to the shore. The suspect told deputies that he thought he may have passed out for a short time and then stated he awoke at 12:30 and began to search for his wife. He then stated that he went to a relative’s home to get assistance and they returned to Vilano Beach to continue the search. Her body was located Sunday afternoon in the St. Augustine Inlet.

District Medical Examiner, Dr. Terrence Steiner performed an autopsy and noted that the cause of death was “due to Trauma to the head, face and neck.” In addition he noted that the manner of death was homicide.

The investigation revealed that the couple attended a wedding and reception Saturday evening and witnesses stated that the two had an argument at the reception. Many additional witnesses were located and questioned as well. Detectives also impounded three vehicles and served several search warrants.

Homicide detectives are continuing the investigation and are looking at any possible subjects involved in the homicide after the fact. They are asking any individuals who may have been in contact with the couple a week ago Saturday night to contact them at the Sheriff’s Office at (904) 824-8304.

Why didn’t anyone at the wedding reception stop the fight that broke out between Ben & Mellisa? Also, usually in A1A there is a manager on duty. Surely someone saw this argument going bad. Why someone who cared didn’t call 911 or try to break it up and get them apart is beyond me. I can only feel remorse for the children. This apparently was bound to happen unfortunately!!

    From FOX30 News:

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A St. Johns County judge denied Benjamin Lightsey, 30, of St. Augustine bond Wednesday. Lightsey is a suspect in the murder of his wife, Melissa Lightsey, 36.

A custody hearing followed Lightsey’s first appearance today. The court determined that the couple’s two children, 3-year-old Sunny, and 16-month-old Zane will remain in the custody of Benjamin Lightsey’s mother for the time being. The custody hearing will continue Friday, Nov. 21.

The St. Johns Co. Sheriff’s Office arrested Benjamin Lightsey, 30, of St. Augustine Tuesday.

Lightsey turned himself into the St. Johns Co. Sheriff’s Office Tuesday morning. His attorney, Patrick Canan, was present.

Last week, a Medical Examiner’s autopsy of Melissa Lightsey found she did not die from a saltwater drowning. The ME report says the cause of death was due to trauma to the head, face and neck. The manner of death was then ruled a homicide.

The report also says the boating injuries on her body were consistent with three propeller type cuts on her body, and they happened postmortem.

Lightsey’s body was found in the St. Augustine Inlet Sunday, Nov. 09. Her husband, Ben Lightsey, says he and his wife went to Surfside park in Vilano Beach late Saturday night. He says his wife went swimming in the water, then disappeared after getting in chest deep water.

Homicide investigators say the couple had attend a wedding reception the Saturday before her body was found. They say witnesses told them the couple had an argument at the reception.

Investigators also say they are looking into any possible suspects who may have been involved in Lightsey’s death, after the fact.

Lightsey faces a first degree murder charge.

If you have any information on this crime, you are asked to call the St. Johns Co. Sheriff’s Office at 904-824-8304.

    From FOX30 News:

ST. JOHNS CO. - Bill and Billy Hunsicker who charter “The Endless Summer” boat in St. Augustine are shocked to learn one of their crewmates, Ben Lightsey is now in jail charged with his wife’s murder.

“It’s pretty frightening because you wouldn’t believe that Ben would be involved in such a thing,” said Bill. “It’s just a horrible situation.”

The Hunsickers say in all of the years they’ve fished with Lightsey, they say he’s never shown signs of aggression.

“He’s the most laid back person you know,” said Billy. “Always happy go-lucky. Never seen a mean bone in his body.”

But according to documents from 2004, an ex-girlfriend once filed a restraining order against him.
In it, she said quote “I am in fear of my life from this crazy man.”

In 1999 Lightsey was arrested on a DUI charge.
The report says he was “verbally loud and used profanity when arrested.”

Many of Melissa Lightsey’s friends say they never saw this coming.
Tuesday they gathered at the carousel in St. Augustine, a place where Melissa often took her two young children.

“It was always happy times being here,” said Jovanina Bossa. “Melissa was always happy and running around with these kids.”

Her body was found in the St. Augustine inlet last Sunday.
Her stepfather, Jim Bryan, says he had a gut feeling from the beginning that her husband’s story of her disappearance was untrue.

“The fact that there as no water in her lungs we knew she was dead before she got in the water so what can you think? He was the last one that saw her alive.”

Even though Ben Lightsey is the only one that has been arrested, Bryan believes Lightsey’s father knows something. Glenn Lightsey is a former detective at the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

“I’m sure he knows everything,” said Bryan. “I don’t know how many hours he was out there on the beach with his son searching. They didn’t call us until 7:23in the morning.”

Marty Shaughnessy hired Melissa as a bartender at A1A Aleworks several years ago. He says what hurts the most is that her children are now left behind without a mother and a father.

“Such a good person and with little kids like that, that’s the hardest part to accept.”

Got something to say?
