Cancer claims wife of Flagler County sheriff

Posted on 04/13/200803/31/2010 By Historic City News 1 Comment on Cancer claims wife of Flagler County sheriff

Lorraine Fleming, wife of Flagler County Sheriff Donald Fleming, died early Saturday morning after waging a courageous battle with cancer according to a notice in the Daytona News Journal.

Fleming, who was 60 and resided in Palm Coast, was known as more than the wife of the sheriff and a homemaker. She made her mark on the community through her support and involvement with several service organizations, those who served with her say.

“She was devoted to the cause of justice,” said Diana Christen, executive director of the Family Life Center, Bunnell. “She was on the forefront of ending domestic violence in the community.”

Additionally, Fleming was a member of the Elks Club, an associate member of the Italian American Club and the Portuguese American Club, as well as a volunteer for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8696, all Palm Coast organizations.

Fleming also worked with the Domestic Abuse Council Inc.

She was such a staunch supporter of the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranches that she requested donations to this organization in lieu of flowers, and they may be sent to P.O. Box 2000, Boys Ranch, FL 32064.

Visitation is Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Craig Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road, Flagler Beach. Fleming’s funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Santa Maria Del Mar Catholic Church, 915 North Central Ave., Flagler Beach.
