Third Annual Symposium on Maritime Archaeology

Chuck Meide reported to Historic City News that the registration form for the Third Annual Northeast Florida Symposium on Maritime Archaeology is now online at LAMP’s webpage — www.LAMPmaritime.org.

The Symposium will take place at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum on Wednesday March 25 through Friday March 27 and promises to be another great event!

This year has a major theme focusing on the design, maintenance, and logistics of archaeological reconstructions and replicas of historic boats and ships, in anticipation of the growing boat building program at LAMP, the construction of the replica ship
Galveztown visiting St. Augustine in 2011, and several builds (chalupa boats and a full-scale caravel) being proposed for the 450th anniversary of St. Augustine’s founding.

And of course there will be plenty of general-themed presentations addressing a wide range of shipwreck archaeology in Florida and beyond. Keynote Speaker will be Russell Skowronek on the evening of the 25th, and there will be a book-signing for the new book “HMS Fowey Lost and Found” by Dr. Skowronek and George R. Fischer in conjunction with the Symposium Dinner Reception at the Lighthouse on Thursday night.

We will also again be enjoying a river cruise, where we will conduct a remote sensing demonstration–if all works we should have side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiler sonar, and magnetometer all working at once!

All presentations are free, and registration fees cover the prices of lunches, the dinner reception, and the river cruise. We hope to see many of you there in late March, the weather should be fabulous that time of year and the Symposium events promise to be lots of fun.
