Historic City News has learned that City Manager John Regan is expecting to save an estimated $103,102 on the Visitor Center parking facility’s annual light bill — thanks to a planned conversion of lighting fixtures largely paid for by a federal stimulus grant.
The city has been awarded a $250,000 grant to convert lighting in the parking facility from high-pressure sodium to Light Emitting Diode (LED) panels.
“The city would contribute $50,000 toward the estimated $300,000 project,” Regan said. “In addition to annual electric bill savings, technology with the LED system will also allow lighting to be turned off in unused zones.”
Approval of the grant and allocation of the partial matching funds is on Monday’s agenda for the regular meeting of the St. Augustine City Commission; begining at 5:00 p.m. in the Alcazar Room at City Hall.
If approved, the grant for the LED lighting in the 24/7 parking facility comes through the Florida Energy and Climate Commission as a federal stimulus Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant.
