Historic City News has been informed that a 60 year-old Palm Coast boat captain has been rescued after his towing vessel capsized in the St. Augustine Inlet this morning.
The boat captain, identified as Norman Manley, was transported to Flagler Hospital and was treated for hypothermia.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call of an overturned vessel at the entrance to the St. Augustine Inlet at 6:20 a.m.
The Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, helicopter and other deputies responded to search for the occupant of the overturned vessel.
In addition, the F.W.C. and the U.S. Coast Guard responded with resources as well as the St. Augustine Police Department and St. Johns County Fire Rescue and County Marine Rescue Lifeguards.
Nearly two hours after the initial report, deputies from the Sheriff’s Office Air One helicopter spotted the mostly submerged boat and then the lone occupant, who was wearing his personal floatation device.
According to Sheriff’s spokesman Kevin Kelshaw, the occupant was found a good distance from where the incident occurred.
The victim was then taken to the dock by Marine Rescue personnel and then transported to Flagler Hospital for treatment.
The victim was towing a disabled sailboat into the Inlet when rough seas caused the tow cable to snap and the victim’s vessel to capsize.
From his hospital bed, the victim thanked everyone for assisting in his recovery from the water.
