St. Johns County Solid Waste Management reported to the local news desk at Historic City News that March 11th will be the last day that they will provide weekday pick-up of residential hazardous waste at sites in Julington Creek, Palm Valley and Crescent Beach.
The economic downturn, the opening of a new permanent facility at Stratton Road and the success of the Community Collection Day program have made the weekday mobile unit collection service costly and inefficient.
The weekday collection service was started several years ago to help residents by reducing the travel distance to the County’s only facility at Tillman Ridge.
Since this time the success of the Community Collection Day (CCD) program, which offers residents the opportunity to dispose of hazardous waste at large venues around the County, has been implemented. The CCD events typically attract hundreds of residents and each collect approximately 75,000 pounds of hazardous material on average.
Additionally, a new transfer station has opened at Stratton Road and U.S. Highway 1 North, just behind the St. Johns County Pet Center. This facility offers daily service closer to the communities in northern St. Johns County and allows County residents to drop off residential hazardous waste and garbage at no cost.
The hours of operation at both Stratton Road and Tillman Ridge are Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.
