Eleventh annual Augustinian lecture at Cathedral

Fr. Thomas S. Willis, Pastor at Cathedral Basilica of Saint Augustine, announced to Historic City News that Alice Camille will be the featured speaker at the Eleventh Annual Augustinian Address presented by the Cathedral.

The address is scheduled for Friday, August 27th at 7:00 p.m. at the Bishop Baker Parish Center. It is part of the Cathedral’s celebrations in observance of the Feast of Saint Augustine of Hippo, patron of the parish and city.

Ms. Camille is a nationally known writer and religious educator. Her books include Invitation to Catholicism: Beliefs, Teachings, Practices which describes how to be Catholic in a vital and joyful way. She has also written Listening to God’s Word part of the “Catholic Spirituality for Adults” series published by RCL/Benzinger. She is a popular speaker at Catholic conferences throughout the United States having been described as someone who “takes God seriously – and the business of religion with a sense of humor.”

The Augustinian Lecture Series was begun in the year 2000 by Fr. Terry Morgan when he served as pastor of the Cathedral. The series brings leading Catholic scholars to speak on St. Augustine of Hippo and his theology as well as on the history of the Catholic Church in Florida, particularly in and around the City of St. Augustine. Previous speakers have included Bishop Robert Baker, previous pastor of the Cathedral and now Bishop of Birmingham; Archbishop Timothy Dolan, now Archbishop of New York; Fr. Robert Imbelli and Fr. Michael Himes, both on the faculty of Boston College; Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio, founder of the Crossroads Initiative, and Fr. Brian Daley, S.J.

This year’s lecture will be preceded by First Vespers for the Solemnity of Saint Augustine at 6:00 p.m. in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine. All are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served following the lecture in the Bishop Baker Center located at 259 St. George Street.
