The City of St. Augustine reported to Historic City News that a sixth neighborhood has been designated as a National Register Historic District, “The Fullerwood Park National Register Historic District”, which is bordered by Macaris Street on the south, Hildreth Drive on the north, San Marco Avenue on the west and Hospital Creek on the east.
State of Florida, Division of Historical Resources approved the application with minor revisions, and will forward the documents to Washington for signature.
This brings the total number of National Register Historic Districts in St. Augustine to six with one more nomination in Tallahassee waiting for transmittal to Washington.
Presently the five designated districts are City of St. Augustine (downtown St. Augustine,) Model Land Company, Abbott Tract, Lincolnville, North City and now The Fullerwood Park District is in the elite group.
The last remaining and only pending nomination is Nelmar Terrace neighborhood.
The City of St. Augustine’s Comprehensive Plan calls for the city to attempt to achieve national register designation status for neighborhoods, however, Mark Knight, Director of Planning and Building stated, “This is a designation the city would pursue anyway because of our history and our desire to keep the historic nature of the city in the forefront.”
