Local St. Augustine reporters at Historic City News have learned that Saturday afternoon about 2:30 p.m., Police Officer Doug Tyus responded to Sunburst Crystal on St. George Street to investigate a shoplifting complaint.
The clerk reported that she saw three white females take items from the store without paying for them and a description of the suspects was broadcast to officers in the area.
Tyus located three white females, matching the description of the shoplifters, at Cordova Street and Treasury Street. Before he could identify them, they fled on foot — each going in a different direction.
A short time later, Tyus located one of those who fled behind Columbia Restaurant.
Police summoned the clerk from Sunburst Crystal who came to the scene and identified the 16 year-old juvenile being detained as one of the three shoplifters in her store earlier.
The juvenile had a small heart pendent belonging to the store. She was taken into custody and charged with theft and resisting a law enforcement officer without violence.
The Juvenile was fingerprinted, processed, and release to her mother. Both mother and daughter refused to identify the other persons with her in the store.
Community Affairs Officer Barbara Stevens of the St. Augustine Police Department reports that the investigation is ongoing.
