Lofton back in local county jail

Historic City News has learned that former St. Augustine resident, 39 year-old Eugene Laquan Lofton, Jr., who was sentenced on April 6th, 2010 and is currently serving a 9 year sentence for cocaine sales, has been arrested by the Department of Corrections and returned to St. Johns County under $1 million bond.

“Our warrant was sexual battery on a minor,” Community Affairs Officer Barbara Stevens of the St. Augustine Police Department, told local Historic City News reporters yesterday. “He has a very violent past, so that is probably why the judge set bond so high.”

Stevens is right. A quick check of Lofton’s Florida conviction record reveals:

Cocaine-sale or purchase sentenced on 07/20/1988 to serve 4y 6m
Attempted robbery with a deadly weapon sentenced on 07/20/1988 to serve 4y 6m
2nd degree murder sentenced on 12/19/1990 to serve 15y
Aggravated assault with weapon sentenced on 12/19/1990 to serve 3y
Shoot or throw missile into building or vehicle sentenced on 12/19/1990 to serve 2y
Possession of firearm by felon sentenced on 12/19/1990 to serve 2y

Once Lofton is tried for these new charges, he will be returned to the Department of Corrections to serve out the remainder of his sentence.
