St. Johns County local news reporters were out in the rain; on the scene of a fatal, multi-vehicle automobile crash near the St. Johns County – St. Augustine Airport shortly after noon today.
A white Pontiac Vibe driven by 19 year-old Daniel Doyle Rocca of Gainesville, was traveling in the left lane, southbound on US-1. When he attempted to pass a silver Lexus ahead of him, he struck the vehicle — leading to two additional collisions.
At approximately 11:55 a.m., Historic City News reporter Michael Gold and Pat Dunn were called to the location; just north of Estralla Avenue.
FHP Lieutenant Bill Leeper reported that when the Pontiac struck the Lexus, the Pontiac flipped over and ran off the right shoulder of the road; coming to rest face-down in the ditch near the railroad tracks.
The Lexus spun out; crossing the center median of US-1 into oncoming traffic.
A medium blue Chevrolet club-cab light body truck driven by 66 year-old Gail Marston of St. Augustine, collided with the Lexus; collapsing the driver door and causing fatal injuries to the Lexus driver.
Marston was transported to Shands Hospital – Jacksonville; having sustained critical injuries from the crash.
Rocca and the passenger of the Pontiac received minor injuries and were taken to Flagler Hospital.
Leeper reports that charges are pending at this time, however, the Florida Highway Patrol is continuing the traffic homicide investigation. The name of the victim has not yet been released; pending family notification.
