Jeremy Robshaw, Public Information Officer with St. Johns County Fire Rescue, informed Historic City News local reporters that on Friday night, emergency personnel responded to a brush fire south of SR-312 near its intersection with SR-207.
Firefighters believe that transients who were camping in the woods west of Cobblestone shopping center may have set the fire that spread to several acres of adjacent wooded area. Extreme dry conditions contributed to the ease with which the flames spread.
Robshaw told Historic City News that the fire was out but for a hot spot here and there.
St. John County firefighters worked throughout the day Saturday to keep the fire out.
“There might be some smoking as the wind blows certain directions,” Robshaw said. “Hopefully we’ll get some rain.”
There were no injuries reported.
