Laughs abounded at The Toast of St. Johns County Toastmasters Club 9551 as members used their wits and wit in the club-level Humorous Speech Contest.
Patsy Heiss, Advanced Communicator Gold, won first place with her western spin on the Bible story of Adam and Eve. Sandy Murphree, Advanced Communicator Silver, took second place with her tale of an elite corps of secret service cats, and Charity Riley, Competent Communicator, placed third with her funny stories about her nieces and nephews.
Area 62 Governor Jimmy Milhollin was present at the contest and participated in the judging.
The top two competitors advance to the Area-level competition, which will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the St. Augustine South Improvement Association Clubhouse, 709 Royal Road. The top two competitors from each of the Area’s clubs will be competing for the chance to represent the Area at the Division contest Oct. 22. The winner of the Division will face competitors from throughout District 84 – from Orlando to Tallahassee – at the Fall Conference, to be held at the World Golf Village Nov. 12.
All competitions are open to the public. Admission to the St. Augustine competition is $5 and includes a light lunch.
The Club’s Evaluation contest will be held 12 noon Wednesday, Sept. 8 during its regular meeting time, and the public is invited to attend. The Toast of St. Johns County meets every 2nd, 4th and 5th Wednesday at the Merrill Lynch Conference Room, Suite 203, in the 3-story office building next door to Outback Steakhouse off State Road 312.
