Historic City News has learned that two separate armed robberies are under investigation at this hour by detectives with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office — who tell local reporters that the incidents are likely connected.
The first incident occurred early this morning around 6:00 a.m., at the Kangaroo located at Wildwood Drive and US-1 South, according to the report filed by Deputy Christopher Barnes. In this robbery, the clerk stated that a white man, approximately 6’ 2”, 185 lbs., wearing tan cargo shorts, a blue shirt, tan boots and a dark pullover cap, implied that he had a weapon under a towel draped over his right hand. He confronted the clerk and demanded money. The clerk complied and the suspect fled on foot behind the store with an undisclosed amount of cash. No weapon was displayed during the robbery and no injuries occurred to anyone at the store.
The second incident occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. this afternoon at the Kangaroo located at Ocean Boulevard and US-1 North. The suspect was wearing a dark patterned utility style shirt, tan cargo shorts, tan boots with a dark band around the boot neck and a dark beanie pulled over his head.
The robber placed a light green colored towel over his right hand and demanded money from the clerk. According to the witnesses, the towel appeared to have a small amount of blood on it. The suspect fled on foot behind the store with an undisclosed amount of cash.
A search for the robber by deputies and K-9’s was unsuccessful. It is believed the suspect left in a vehicle after fleeing the stores.
Anyone who may have information on either of these robberies is asked to contact Detective Hines with the Robbery Section at 904-824-8304 or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-8477.
