This morning before The Lynx took on its first dockside tour, the city fire department and U.S. Coast Guard made an on-board inspection to insure the vessel was in compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements while it’s here; through February.
The Lynx is an interpretation of a Baltimore Clipper Schooner from the War of 1812 that sails as a living history museum. These two-mast vessels, with their heavily raked spars, were renowned for their swiftness and maneuverability.
On board, it’s more than just a sightseeing tour. The Lynx can carry as many as 49 people who help crew members set sail. The work can be hard, but for some, it’s a unique experience.
In keeping with her mission to bring life to the naval traditions of the early 19th century, The Lynx has been fitted with historic artillery: four six-pounder carronades and four half-pounder swivel guns. Her crew wears uniforms of the 1812 period.
“It’s critical for us to do what we can to get people out on the boat and to make sure they have a wonderful time and tell all their friends,” said crew member Holly Culing. The tall ship’s motto is “Be excellent to each other and to your ship”.
The Lynx Educational Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, educational organization, dedicated to hands-on educational programs that teach the history of America’s struggle to preserve its independence.
“We’re a non-profit foundation and of course we’re always concerned about income. Especially now, these are tough economic times and we’ve had a lot of cut backs,” said Lynx Captain Craig Chipman.
Locals and tourists alike are hoping the organization can weather the financial storm.
