Two suspected in string of thefts captured in Flagler

Flagler County Sheriff’s spokesperson Debra Johnson reported to Historic City News that deputies arrested two Jacksonville men Sunday morning that may to be responsible for an estimated $100,000 worth of retail thefts.

32 year-old Marquis Sibley who resides on Scriven Street and 41 year-old Napoleon Hillman who resides on Murray Street, were arrested and charged with felony retail theft.

During routine patrol in the parking lot of the Walmart on Cypress Point Parkway in Palm Coast, Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Weber noticed a man matching the description of a suspect wanted in connection with the theft of six X-Box Game Systems on December 10th. Weber observed the man exit a White Ford Crown Victoria; then enter the store.

The store experienced a power outage while the man was inside. Store management placed personnel at the entrances and exits of the store to check customer receipts. Employees found a large screen television that had been left in a cart near one of the exits.

The two men are not suspected of causing the power outage, but are believed to have abandoned the television at the exit.

Deputies waited in the parking lot. The man, who was accompanied by an unnamed female, returned to the vehicle. A second couple met them at their vehicle. The tag on the vehicle was covered with a bag, so deputies made a traffic stop.

The Walmart Asset Protection Coordinator positively identified the two men as having stolen $1,800 worth of X-Box systems in December.

“The heads-up work of the lieutenant resulted in the arrest of these two men. Retail theft to this extent affects all of us. We are fortunate they are off the streets,” said Sheriff Donald W. Fleming.

Both men were arrested and transported to the Flagler County Inmate Facility. Sibley was released after posting $15,000 bond. Hillman was being held Monday on $10,000 bond.

The protection coordinator said the two me are believed to be responsible for numerous retail thefts in at least five other Walmart stores at various locations between Jacksonville and Sanford. The losses associated with the thefts are estimated at $100,000.

Two females with the men were released at the scene when it was determined they were not involved in thefts.
