Flagler College has invited Historic City News readers when they welcome Woodrow Wilson Scholar Dwight Pitcaithley on March 24th, with a presentation entitled, “The Secession of Florida in 1861: Reflections After 150 Years.”
Pitcaithley will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Virginia Room of the Ringhaver Student Center, on the corner of King and Sevilla streets.
Pitcaithley has devoted his career to public history and the preservation of national parks. He retired in 2005 from the National Park Service where he served as Chief Historian and was responsible for the management and preservation of the country’s national resources.
The former President of the National Council for Public History, Pitcaithley has served on the editorial board of The Public Historian, and he presently serves on the editorial board of The Journal of American History.
Pitcaithley received his Ph.D. in History from Texas Tech University and currently teaches history at New Mexico State University. He has published several papers pertaining to public memory and the role of historic sites in public education, including “Historic Sites: What Can Be Learned from Them,” for which he won the James Madison Prize of the Society for History in the Federal Government.
The event is free and open to the public; however, seating is on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Sign language interpreters are provided.
