Sergeant Charles E. Mulligan, Community Affairs Coordinator for the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, updated the local news desk at Historic City News on the status of the human remains recovered at a thickly wooded site along the south side of SR-16 last week and over the weekend.
A forensic autopsy is being performed in an effort to determine the exact cause of death and to make a positive identification of the remains; however, the District 23 Medical Examiner’s Office says that they have been unable to confirm identity through a dental records comparison.
DNA taken from the remains has been sent to a laboratory to be run through the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) in hopes to receive a match with known samples.
The investigation started last Friday when a deputy patrolling State Road 16 was flagged down by citizens, shortly after 8:00 a.m. The witnesses told the deputy that they discovered a boot — containing what they believed to be the remains of a human foot.
“This process may take several weeks — but we will advise when we receive the notification,” Mulligan told Historic City News local reporters.
