The St. Augustine Beach pier will close today at 2:00 p.m.
County Emergency Management officials hope to reopened the ramps and pier sometime Saturday after Hurricane Irene passes and conditions allow.
NOAA reports that Hurricane Irene is a Category 3 hurricane that is expected to pass about 200 miles east of St. Johns County; creating rough surf, dangerous rip tides, beach erosion, some coastal flooding as well as locally heavy rainfall and coastal winds of 20 to 26 mph with wind gusts of up to 40 mph.
