Historic City News readers have the opportunity to save $100, $300, $400 or more on Monday morning, by obeying the posted speed limits as they drive through the school zone on Anastasia Boulevard near R.B. Hunt Elementary School and other school zones within the City.
Public Information Officer Mark Samson told Historic City News that school is back in session, so, the St. Augustine Police Department will begin strictly enforcing the posted speeds in school zones beginning next Monday morning; August 29th.
“The Police Department will place message boards up in both directions Sunday night to warn drivers of the need to slow down,” Samson told Historic City News. “Drivers that do not heed the warning will be cited with unlawful speed within a school zone.”
The fine is hefty for speeding in a school zone, according to information on the website of Clerk of Court Cheryl Strickland,
Speeding in a School Zone
1-9 miles over…$156.00
10-14 miles over…$306.00
15-19 miles over…$406.00
20-29 miles over…$456.00
30 miles & over…$606.00
After the signs come down the St. Augustine Police Department will still make regular appearances in all of the school zones within the city limits, according to Samson.
“This enforcement is to bring attention to our school age children who are walking, biking or getting on and off our school buses,” said Chief of Police Loran K. Lueders. “The men and women of the police department want to make sure this year is a safe school year for all of us.”
