Bird Island Park Nature Mosaic dedication

Posted on 03/04/201103/06/2011 By Historic City News

Byway Program Administrator, Sallie O’Hara, announced to Historic City News reporters that the Westervelt Family and Friends of A1A will host a celebration to dedicate the Nature Mosaic at Bird Island Park as a memorial to Doris F. Westervelt.

Bird Island Park is a 4-acre park located behind the Ponte Vedra Library on A1A and is the most northern park situated along the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway. The park opened to the public in October 2010 with planned additions to be completed by St. Johns County and Bird Island Park Association.

The dedication will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. in the storytelling area at the park.

The mosaic depicts animals native to Florida’s marshland, uplands and coastal habitats and is made of multi-colored tiles. The artists and over one hundred people contributing to the Nature Mosaic and other art in the park will be recognized by A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway at the event.

O’Hara will unveil projects using the mosaic as a centerpiece. “The Nature Mosaic is a striking addition to the park and sure to draw many visitors, to carry the message of our beautiful Bird Island Park along the Byway, across America and around the world,” O’Hara said.
