Community Affairs Officer Barbara Stevens reported to Historic City News that the St. Augustine Police Department was called to Carmelo’s Marketplace just before midnight on Saturday night, to investigate a reported carjacking attempt.
An off-duty law enforcement officer from Georgia told police that he was on vacation with his family and that they had rented scooters to drive around the city.
According to the incident report, as the victims were driving down Malaga Street, a white male, later identified as 20 year-old Matthew Weicki, jumped into the street and attempted to stop the scooter being driven by the off-duty officer’s juvenile daughter.
The daughter did not stop and continued to travel down the street.
Her father stopped his scooter and asked Weicki what he was doing. Weicki demanded the father give him his scooter.
Once the victim identified himself as a Law enforcement officer, Weicki began yelling profanities at him and his family as he walked into Carmelo’s parking lot.
The off-duty officer detained Weicki until police arrived. Weicki was taken into custody and charged with attempted carjacking.
