Father Thomas Willis announced this year’s Christmas Mass schedule for the Cathedral Basilica of St Augustine to Historic City News readers.
On Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24, there will be two Masses at the Cathedral.
The first at 4:00 p.m. will feature a choir composed of children from the parish community.
The second Mass for the Christmas Vigil will be at 7:00 p.m.
There will also be a 5:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve at the Prince of Peace Votive Church located at 101 San Marco Avenue on the grounds of the Mission of Nombre de Dios.
The Most Rev. Felipe J. Estévez of the Diocese of St. Augustine will be the principal celebrant and homilist when the traditional Christmas Mass at Midnight is held. This will be Bishop Estévez’ first Christmas in the Nation’s Oldest City since he was installed as the Diocese’s tenth bishop in June 2011.
On Christmas Day, the Mass at Dawn – traditionally known as “The Shepherd’s Mass” – will be celebrated at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church located in Historic Lincolnville at 8:00 a.m.
Also on Christmas Day, Masses will be celebrated at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine.
The rector of the Cathedral, Fr. Thomas Willis, notes that the normal Sunday schedule will be not be followed on Christmas Day. There will not be Masses at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is located at 38 Cathedral Place in downtown St. Augustine. It is home to America’s First Catholic Parish — founded on September 8, 1565.
