Colgan recognized in debut of Anthology

Coordinator of Public Information, Priscilla N. Proctor, reported to Historic City News that Flagler College senior Cal Colgan has been named the Grand Award winner of the first edition of Anthology; a new print publication produced by the college’s online newspaper, the Gargoyle.

The 2011 Anthology, which was released earlier this month, showcases communication and other Flagler students’ work in journalism, opinion, public relations and photography.

Colgan’s commentary on homelessness in St. Johns County, “Crippled by apathy, not compassion,” received the top score out of more than 60 submissions that were judged by six communication department faculty. He received a $100 scholarship and digital camera as the Grand Award winner.

Other students included in the Anthology were Lauren Belcher, who has been published in Historic City News, Michael Isam, Caroline Young, Mari Pothier, Emily Hoover, Brittany Hall, Ryan Pando, Michael Newberger, Eliza Jordan, Luis Mark Gonzalez Jr., Alexandra Maisch, Phillip C. Sunkel IV, and Rob Schanz.

Students received awards for news articles, public relation pieces, feature stories, commentaries, photo submissions and personal essays. Each category had a gold, silver and honorable mention distinction.

The Anthology was created in partnership with Dow Advantage Public Relations — a student pre-professional group at the college.

The Flagler College Gargoyle went online-only in 2010. Colgan is co-editor of the online-only student publication. They chose to publish the Anthology as a way to continue producing a print publication – one that would showcase student work – but still continue to focus on producing its award-winning website.
