Historic City News was informed by Captain Conrad Matt that the St. Augustine Garrison, a local re-enactment company formed in 1984, heads to Fort King George State Historic Site in Darien this Saturday for the Debatable Land Encampment.
The Garrison, a member company of Historic Florida Militia, will interpret the defenders of St. Augustine as they battle the Scottish interlopers on Florida’s land — which, in 1513, extended all the way north to Nova Scotia.
“If you haven’t seen Fort King George yet, this weekend’s forecast for mild, sunny weather, would be an ideal time to visit,” Matt told reporters. “The encampment activities will include a re-enactment of the 1742 battle of Bloody Marsh.”
In addition, on November 19th, the Garrison will form an honor guard to escort the Mayor of St. Augustine and his party from Government House to the Lightner Museum on the occasion of the Mayor’s Holiday Lighting Gala to benefit the St. Francis House Building Fund.
The Garrison also announced to Historic City News, the return of the Changing of the Guard on November 26, December 17, January 14 and February 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. from the City Gates, along St. George Street, ending in front of Government House.
Readers who may be interested in participating in any of these events should visit www.staugustinegarrison.com or on Facebook as “The St. Augustine Garrison”.
The Changing of the Guard and other local events are made possible by grants from the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council.
