Deputies run for excercise — and a cause

Flagler Sheriff Donald W. Fleming commended several deputies who are putting their best foot forward, repeatedly; Historic City News learned they would run to keep fit and support fundraisers for local charities.

Six deputies have teamed up to run in the first “Rock Races Flagler 50 Challenge” race this Saturday, October 22nd, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Central Park in Town Center located at 975 Central Avenue in Palm Coast.

The 50-mile relay foot race, and its 12 legs, which will take the runners along a snaking course of trails throughout the county and along the coast, will start and end at Central Park.

The sheriff’s team consists of Sgt. Steve Cole, Sgt. Chris Sepe, Cpl. Steve Brandt, Detective Mike Breckwoldt, Detective Mark Moy and Detective Mike Miller. Two other Flagler County deputies, Detective Roger Spires and Deputy Joe Costello, will be competing in the race on another team.

The event will raise funds for the Grace Community Food Pantry in Flagler County. The race organizers have set a goal of $10,000 to donate to the food bank.

Then, on Thursday, October 27th, several deputies will be wearing pink and running the 5K race in Town Center — a fundraiser supporting the fight against breast cancer.

“These races keep our deputies fit and provide an extra benefit,” Fleming told Historic City News. “They are running the trails that are not routinely patrolled, so they provide an additional level of security while they are out.”

Public Information Officer Debra Johnson said in an announcement released earlier today that the Sheriff’s Office supports physical fitness and health wellness for all employees. In this case, the community benefits while the deputies exercise.
