Historic City News received word from Tom Iacuzio that Flagler College will hold its fall commencement ceremony for graduating seniors on Saturday, December 10 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Approximately 180 students will receive diplomas in the Flagler College Gym followed by a second ceremony at 4 p.m. in the Flagler College Auditorium; where 16 seniors will graduate from the Flagler College Public Administration program.
The commencement speaker will be Dr. Kathy Deagan, Distinguished Research Curator Emerita at the Florida Museum of Natural History and the Lockwood Professor of Florida and Caribbean Archaeology at the University of Florida.
Dr. Deagan has been recognized as a pioneer in the field of historical archaeology. Her research has focused on the archaeology of the Spanish colonial period in Florida and the Caribbean. She has conducted excavations in St. Augustine since 1972 and she is also associated with the excavations of La Navidad, the famous lost colony of Christopher Columbus in Haiti and Columbus’ later settlement of La Isabela in the Dominican Republic.
Dr. Deagan received her Ph.D. in 1974 from the University of Florida and, after teaching in the Florida State University Anthropology Department for eight years, she joined the University of Florida faculty in 1982.
King Street will be closed in both directions at the main gate of the college, from approximately 8:45 to 9:45 a.m., for the processional. Commencement is not open to the public.
