Historic City News will publish student articles
Flagler College Magazine Editor and Newspaper Adviser, Brian Thompson, met with Historic City News Editor Michael Gold and reached an accord that will help journalism students at Flagler College have their work published outside of college media, on a selected basis.
As a faculty adviser, Thompson said, “several students have mentioned getting their stories published in Historic City News and they want to be in there more.” During the meeting, Thompson determined that this was a “win-win” for the students as well as the daily online news journal.
Flagler College has moved away from a print format for their award-winning Gargoyle; realizing the same cost and production savings employed at Historic City News, where we operate in a completely online media platform.
Working with Internet based tools and commercial electronic publishing software, accessible to the students from their dorm rooms, writers will gain valuable real-world experience in working with an editor, fact checking and time management. Participating students quickly and easily have the ability to generate tens of thousands of additional daily exposures to their writings with no cost to them or the college.
Gold, who is a Flagler graduate, said he appreciates the value of applying the material students are learning in the classroom to live situations they are likely to encounter off campus when they begin to enter the job market. “Prospective employers will be more impressed that the journalism graduate was published in something other than the school newspaper,” Gold said.
Thompson, also a Flagler alum, told Gold that he “always appreciates when someone gives one of our kids a boost.”
Thompson and Gold will be open to explore other opportunities for students of the local college. “Students in Free Enterprise and the Dow Advantage students may soon be working with sales, marketing and promotion aspects of Historic City News as we look in to those programs and their needs.” Dow is a Public Relations internship; however, they have had Business majors effectively contribute to the team.
