Gloria LeBlanc, St. Augustine Coffee Party Coordinator, invited Historic City News readers to attend a town hall meeting with former United States Senator, George McGovern.
The event will take place on Monday, April 4th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the main branch of the St. Johns County Public Library located at 1960 North Ponce de Leon Boulevard.
McGovern, who is a part-time resident of St. Augustine and will turn 90 years-old in July, will speak on the topic “The Impact of Money in Politics.” The former Senator continues to summer in his home state of South Dakota.
“The Coffee Party mission is to seek and spread accurate information, to empower members and the voting public to take action, and participate in government based on informed decisions,” LeBlanc told Historic City News. “We welcome a civil and honest exchange of ideas from people representing all parties and points of view.”
Although McGovern earned his Ph.D. from Northwestern University and has accumulated both public and private accolades throughout his career, he is probably best known as the presidential nominee selected at the 1972 Democratic National Convention held in the Miami Beach Convention Center. He and his final running mate, Sargent Shriver, who accepted the spot after Thomas Eagleton withdrew, were defeated by Republican President Richard M. Nixon and Vice President Spiro T. Agnew.
Coffee Party is a national, non-partisan political organization working to create a fair and inclusive society. We believe that reasonable and responsible deliberation from multiple vantage points is the best way to arrive at decisions that serve the good of individuals, and the nation as a whole.
