Historic City News was notified that District 23 Medical Examiner, Dr. Predag Bulic, would have to determine what caused the death of a person discovered by firefighters early this morning inside a burning residence one mile west of I-95, south of CR-210 in St Augustine.
At approximately 4:30 Saturday morning, St. Johns County Fire Rescue responded to a residential structure fire in Southlake subdivision, according to County spokesman Jeremy Robshaw.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is trying to determine where and how the fire started in the 200 block of Southlake Drive while the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatality.
Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported hearing the sound of local smoke alarms and observed smoke showing from a rear door of the single story residential structure.
Crews made entry and located the body of one victim and a small fire.
The fire was quickly contained and extinguished by firefighters without incident and minimal damage to the structure.
Firefighters completed a search of the structure for additional fire or occupants and finding none secured the scene and awaited the arrival of investigators.
