Ed Wuellner, Executive Director of the airport, announced to Historic City News today that the Federal Aviation Administration has awarded the Northeast Florida Regional Airport in St. Augustine a $6.19 million grant for the airport’s “Taxiway B” project.
“This grant helps the Northeast Florida Regional Airport accomplish its long-term goals,” said. “I would like to thank Congressman John L. Mica for his continued support of the airport and St. Johns County.”
The FAA grant to improve the runway safety area covers 95 percent of the project’s cost which will bring the taxiway to federal standards. Additionally, the project will help stop erosion from an adjacent marsh.
“Projects like this are essential to spur economic development in our local community,” said Congressman Mica in an e-mail to Historic City News this morning. “Transportation improvements, like this project, will create jobs and will provide improved access to and from Northeast Florida.”
The project is slated to start within two to three weeks after the grant is processed. The construction timeline is expected to last six months.
