Seat belt crackdown underway

St. Johns County sheriff’s deputies were observed by Historic City News this morning as part of a zero tolerance, round-the-clock sweep looking for motorists who fail to wear a safety belt.

This is Florida’s 11th annual “ClickIt or Ticket” campaign and St. Johns County Sheriff’s spokesman Kevin Kelshaw, told local reporters that buckling up will also protect your pocket book.

Florida has a primary safety belt law that allows law enforcement officers to pull over motorists that fail to buckle up. Historic City News readers are forewarned that deputies and police will fan out across Florida in a life-saving effort to do just that.

The push behind the campaign is to reduce the number of traffic fatalities and serious injuries that result from occupants not wearing seat belts in crashes. Educating the public may reduce the risk of serious injury or death.

“Safety belts save lives,” Kelshaw said. “So, be sure to click it – or get ready for a ticket.”
