Carolyn Smith, Operations Director of the non-profit St. Augustine Humane Society, invites Historic City News readers to participate in an ongoing educational exercise that takes participants on a journey through the life of an animal shelter dog.
The St. Augustine Humane Society, whose mission is to prevent pet overpopulation with affordable spay and neuter programs and to eliminate pets being relinquished to shelters, has launched this new awareness program — “Abandoned to Adored”.
Working with the St. Johns County Animal Control Pet Center, an abandoned pet will be tracked from initial intake to adoption. The pet will be medically rehabilitated, professionally trained, then groomed and pampered. Finally, the pet is sent on a “pet supply shopping spree” with program volunteers before it is placed in a perfectly matched and loving home.
Individuals and families who wish to participate in this adoption program can learn more and register by calling 904.829.2737. By submitting the application, participants agree to be interviewed before selection and to have stories and photos released to the media.
“We are honored to have so many volunteers in the community who work with us to implement programs like this,” Smith said. “Our thanks go to the St. Johns County Animal Control Pet Center where someone will adopt a deserving new pet all the while participating in a fun community activity.”
