St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar announced to Historic City News this morning that the agency has been awarded reaccredited status by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation and is only the third agency in the state to receive the prestigious “Excelsior Agency” award.
The new award recognizes agencies with long term and successful reviews of their policies and procedures.
The CFA, which relocated recently to Tallahassee from Orlando, reviews all aspects of an agency’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services to determine compliance with 276 recognized standards of excellence.
The award and Certificate of Reaccreditation was presented to Sheriff Shoar and the Accreditation Team recently by Chairman of the Commission, Judge Keith Cary, of the Twentieth Judicial Circuit.
The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office was originally accredited in 1996 and this was the fifth reaccreditation.
St. Johns County now joins the Orange County and St. Lucie County Sheriffs’ Offices as the only agencies in the state to receive the prestigious award, which is limited to agencies that have earned five continuous unconditional assessments.
Sheriff Shoar was honored to accept the award on behalf of the agency and said, “It is my commitment to our community that we will continue to be the best we can be in protecting and serving our citizens.”
Undergoing the voluntary state accreditation process provides an agency with a quality assurance review and encourages intense self-scrutiny, resulting in more efficient and effective daily operations.
Becoming accredited by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation is considered a significant accomplishment and this status is held in high esteem by the criminal justice community.
“By choosing to continue participation in the formal and thorough peer review by the Commission, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office can document to the citizens of Florida that it adheres to high standards of professionalism and is among the finest in the state,” noted Lori Mizell, CFA Executive Director.
The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is up for its 7th international accreditation (CALEA) review and is in line for a similar award internationally. The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. granted the Sheriff’s Office its first international accreditation in 1991 and could present the agency with the Accreditation with Excellence Award next month.
