Historic City News has been alerted that the centerpiece of the Plaza has been closed to public access because of structural problems.
Cathy DuPont informed local reporters this morning that it was determined that several of the columns presently supporting the gazebo’s roof have deteriorated to the point of needing replacement.
The City is hoping temporary supports can be employed to allow some use of the gazebo until such time that new supports can be manufactured and installed.
During the approximately six weeks of construction while permanent repairs are being made, the gazebo will be closed.
Dates for that phase have not been determined nor have exact costs for the repairs been determined.
The gazebo stands in the center of the city’s historic Plaza de la Constitucion and serves as the stage for many small events; primarily serving as a stage for ceremonies and concerts.
At this time it is not clear if the annual summer musical series “Concerts in the Plaza” will have to be canceled or rescheduled. The 21st season is scheduled to start on Memorial Day.
