Richard Goldman, executive director of the St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra and the Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau, announced to local reporters at Historic City News that they have been recognized with a “Gold Magellan Award” by Travel Weekly — the national newspaper of the travel industry.
From more than 450 entries, received from around the world, Travel Weekly selected 22 destination organizations to recognize with a Gold Magellan Award.
The “Our History Is Not the Same Old Story” marketing campaign focused on educating tourist about the many other things that make our city a premier destination — in addition to the well-known heritage tourism destinations.
“This is really terrific recognition for our recent work,” said Goldman. “We’re convinced that through our efforts with our ad agency, Ypartnership, Florida’s Historic Coast tourism will continue to move in a positive direction. Of course, it’s always nice to have our work honored by such an influential publication as Travel Weekly.”
Announced in this week’s edition of Travel Weekly, the annual Magellan Awards are, according to the publication, presented “to honor the best in travel and salute the outstanding travel professionals behind it all, from design to marketing to services.” The awards are among the most distinguished in the travel industry. A prestigious panel of judges awarded zero to 100 points to each entry. Only those receiving a numerical score of 90 or more were awarded the prestigious Gold Magellan.
The “Our History Is Not the Same Old Story” campaign continues to communicate to potential visitors that, of course, Florida’s Historic Coast has lots of history, but it’s truly unique, vibrant and exciting. Our history is entertaining, educational and fun. Plus, there are lots of opportunities for visitors to create their own history – on the golf course, on a romantic getaway, on an unforgettable family excursion at the beach or on one of many other adventures that await here.
The Gold Magellan is a welcome addition to the five Flagler Awards the VCB received at the recent Governor’s Conference on Tourism and the one gold, two silver and two bronze Adrian Awards presented to the bureau last November by the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International.
