St Augustine and St Johns County residents will be seeing a new traffic signal soon; installation of the traffic control devices and the required ground markings are underway on SR-312 at this time; with an expected completion date of February.
In addition to the solid red, yellow and green arrows found on traffic signals at major intersections, the Florida Department of Transportation announced to Historic City News that they have begun installation of a new “flashing yellow arrow”.
The “flashing yellow arrow” reminds drivers to yield to oncoming traffic when turning left.
The first intersections along SR-312 to receive the new traffic control devices are at Sgt. Tutten Drive and at Plantation Island Drive.
How to obey the traffic signals:
– Red Arrow means STOP and remain stopped. No left turns allowed.
– Yellow Arrow means prepare to stop or complete your left turn if you are in an intersection.
– Flashing yellow arrow means left turns are allowed. Yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. REMEMBER: The oncoming traffic has the green light.
– Green arrow means GO. It is safe to turn left; oncoming traffic must stop.
Studies by the Federal Highway Administration show that the flashing yellow arrow reduces crashes at intersections where it is installed by providing a clear distinction between when left-turning motorists are protected from oncoming traffic and when they must yield.
It also helps move more traffic through an intersection and provides flexibility in traffic management options.
