My Lai Massacre and Modern Art

The Flagler College Community Lecture Series will conclude its fall semester offerings on Tuesday, December 13th at 10:00 a.m. with a presentation by Chris Balaschak, Ph.D., entitled “Guerilla/Gorilla – The My Lai Massacre and Modern Art.”

Balaschak, an assistant professor of art history at Flagler, is will examine the cultural and political impact of Ron Haeberle’s 1969 photographs from the My Lai Massacre, in particular their resonance with photography exhibitions and performance art events at the Museum of Modern Art that same year.

Balaschak received his doctoral degree in 2010 from the Ph.D. program in Visual Studies, University of California, Irvine.

He earned his M.F.A. in Criticism and Theory from the Art Center College of Design and his B.A. from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University.

Balaschak specializes in the history of landscape photography. He is published in journals including Photographies, Octopus Frieze, Art Review and Folio Weekly.

The Flagler College Community Lecture Series offers educational and cultural opportunities to the St. Augustine community. Topics are provided by local experts and Flagler faculty.

Tickets are $5 per person for a single lecture, or $15 for the semester. Active military personnel may attend at no charge. Lectures begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Flagler Room at Flagler College, 74 King Street in St Augustine.
