Police announce arrest in Kangaroo robbery

Operations Division Commander, Barry E. Fox, announced to Historic City News reporters the arrest of a St Augustine man police say is responsible for the convenience store robbery that occurred at the Kangaroo Express during the early morning hours of November 28th.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. that day, St Augustine Police responded to the robbery call at 800 South Ponce de Leon Boulevard.

The 54 year-old female store clerk and another employee were at the rear of the Kangaroo store when they heard the doorbell ring. As she approached the front counter, the clerk noticed a man crouched with the sleeve of his white t-shirt pulled over his head.

When the robber stood up, the clerk told police that he demanded the money from one of the cash registers. According to the clerk’s statement, the man said, “this is a robbery” and he patted his right pants pocket saying that he had a gun.

The clerk surrendered all of the bills in the register; which has since been reported to be less than $100.

Based on the review of videotaped surveillance and the description from witnesses, police have arrested 22 year-old David Wayne Crnkovich who resides at 1465 San Juline Circle.

On the same morning at approximately 6:30 a.m., a second robbery occurred at the Lil’ Champ convenience store located at 123 King Street. Based on the review of videotaped surveillance and the similar description of events from witnesses, police believe Crnkovich is likely the robber in that crime.

Additional charges against Crnkovich are pending; as police continue to gather evidence and investigate the King Street robbery.

Crnkovich remains in custody in the St. Johns County Detention Facility this morning in lieu of $50,000 bond on the first robbery charge; which is a second-degree felony.
