Commission candidate votes early this week

Historic City News caught up with District 3 candidate for the St Johns County Board of Commissioners, Bill McClure yesterday as he stopped to cast his ballot in the Republican Presidential Preference Primary election.

McClure said that he lives in District 3 but works in District 1, so, he drives past the Supervisor of Elections Office every day. “I won’t be able to vote on Tuesday,” McClure told reporters. “This is a very important election — I hope all Republican voters will exercise their right to vote and cast their ballot.”

Currently, McClure faces opposition from 18 year-old political newcomer Zachary Proscia Silva in the November 6th General Election. Silva has no party affiliation.

Commissioner Mark Miner, a 28 year-old Republican serving his first term in political office, has said, informally, that he intends to seek re-election to the District 3 seat, however, he has not yet announced.

Both McClure and Silva are in the process of collecting petitions from St Johns County voters that will qualify them to have their names appear on the ballot. In Miner’s first election, he paid the qualifying fee instead of collecting voter petitions — it is likely that if he chooses to seek re-election, he will pay the $3,870.72 fee again.

Qualifying dates for all county offices, as well as U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Special District Offices, State Senator, Municipalities, State Representative and Community Development Districts, will be from noon, June 4 through noon, June 8, 2012.
