The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park will celebrate International Vulture Awareness Day on Saturday and Sunday, September 1st and 2nd with special presentations, opportunities for guests to feed a vulture and vulture-focused interactive games for kids.
The internationally coordinated day publicizes the conservation of vultures to a wider audience, highlighting the important role vultures play in ecosystems around the world and the efforts of organizations like the Alligator Farm to provide a brighter future for the birds.
Special presentations featuring live vultures at the Birds of Africa exhibit will focus on the fascinating carrion-feeders.
Guests may purchase favorite vulture snacks like meat and meal worms to feed one of the zoo’s vultures. Kids will have the opportunity to build a vulture nest with a variety of items commonly used by the large birds. Games, quizzes and take-home coloring pages will also be available throughout the weekend.
The Alligator Farm will post additional vulture information throughout the zoo for guests to discover.
Bird and Mammal Curator Gen Anderson said, “The Alligator Farm’s goal of participating in International Vulture Awareness Day is to educate zoo guests about the purpose of this group of birds, the perils they face and how their population decreases affect humans.”
International Vulture Awareness Day began at the Birds of Prey Programme in South Africa and the Hawk Conservancy Trust in England. This year over 100 facilities and organizations in more than 20 different countries will celebrate the day.
