James Augustine Ponce Sr. passed in his sleep peacefully on Monday, May 28, 2012, to join his wife, Jaqueline Swain Ponce, in the arms of Jesus. His son, James, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth were by his bedside.
Jim was born and raised in the city of St. Augustine and was the founder, owner, and builder of the Conch House Marina and Resort.
In the 1960s, he was hired by the state of Florida as an ambassador to represent the Menorcan heritage. As a descendent of the oldest family of St. Augustine, he dressed in replica, Ponce de Leon uniforms, made in Spain, and traveled throughout the country representing Florida in shows.
He is survived by son, James A. Ponce Jr., and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; David Ponce and daughter-in-law, Sandra; and six grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at Craig Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, and his funeral following at 11 a.m., the Rev. Pat Turner Sharpton, officiating. Burial will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery.
He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of his presence.
