EPIC Community Services reported to Historic City News that the “Light the Plaza for Recovery” event, celebrating individuals in recovery, and promoting the message that treatment is worth it, would be held on Saturday, September 22, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Plaza de la Constitucion.
National Recovery Month, now in its 23rd year, raises awareness of substance use and mental disorders, highlights individuals who have reclaimed their lives and are living happy and healthy lives in long-term recovery and also honors the treatment and recovery service providers who make recovery possible.
“We know firsthand that treatment works and that people do recover,” said Patti Greenough, EPIC Chief Executive Officer. “We want to share that hope and information with the residents of our community and honor those who are on their recovery journey.”
Activities planned will include live music, testimonials from those in recovery and information on addiction prevention and treatment. Participants will be able to light luminaries to celebrate loved ones who are in recovery.
EPIC, and other recovery organizations, promote the message that recovery, in all its forms, is possible. During Recovery Month, they encourage citizens to take action to ensure access to substance abuse services for anyone.
“Almost everyone knows someone dealing with substance abuse – this is an issue affecting us all,” Greenough told reporters. “We want to celebrate those folks in recovery and offer hope and information to those needing help with addiction.”
