St Johns County Sheriff’s Office Media Relations Officer Kevin Kelshaw informed local Historic City News reporters that an arrest has been made in the investigation of numerous car burglaries reported over the past two nights.
Deputy Michael Kunovich was beginning his shift shortly before 4:00 a.m. this morning when he joined other deputies searching for a burglary suspect in the area of Johns Creek Drive in northwest St Johns County.
Kunovich discovered a local man, identified as 23-year old Cecil Paul Young, who resides at 2925 North First Street in St Augustine, loitering and prowling in the area of CR-210 near the St Johns Parkway.
Young was questioned as to why he was out on foot at that hour of the morning; walking along the highway. Young told the deputy that he was looking for work and was walking from a relative’s home. The home that the subject indicated turned out to be abandoned.
Deputies located a black backpack on the ground where Young was first contacted. Inside the backpack were several electronic devices along with a .380 handgun. Deputies were able to verify that the gun had been reported stolen the night before from a residence in the 200 block of Johns Glen Drive.
St. Johns County man was arrested on charges of dealing in stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon and loitering.
As detectives continue their investigation, anyone who resides in that area that believes they have been a victim of a car burglary is asked to preserve the scene and contact the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office at (904) 824-8304.
